Cocopeat in horticulture: why European growers are switching to Kerala coir pith

The Netherlands alone imports over 200,000 metric tonnes of cocopeat annually — predominantly from Kerala, India. This shift from peat moss to cocopeat has accelerated since 2020 as EU sustainability regulations have restricted peat extraction across Europe. Cocopeat, a byproduct of coconut husk processing, is fully renewable and biodegrades cleanly at the end of its growing cycle.

Kerala cocopeat is preferred over Sri Lankan and Vietnamese cocopeat for its consistently low EC (electrical conductivity). For hydroponic tomato, pepper, and cucumber cultivation — which requires precise nutrient control — an EC below 0.5 mS/cm is essential. Kerala's washing and buffering processes reliably achieve this specification, whereas other origins can be inconsistent.

Malabar vs Tellicherry pepper — a buyer's guide to Indian black pepper grades

Both Malabar and Tellicherry pepper come from Kerala, but they represent two distinct grades. Malabar is the standard export grade — whole black peppercorns with a minimum bulk density of 550 g/litre and black berry content above 94%. It is the most widely traded Indian pepper grade and supplies blenders, food manufacturers, and spice processors worldwide.

Tellicherry is a premium bold-berry grade — peppercorns are screened above 4.75mm diameter, producing larger, more aromatic berries with higher piperine content. The name comes from the port of Thalassery (Tellicherry) in northern Kerala, historically the primary export point for premium pepper. European and American specialty food companies and premium restaurant suppliers specifically request Tellicherry grade for its superior flavour profile.

Coir geotextiles and logs for erosion control — what civil engineers need to know

Coir geotextiles — woven mats of natural coconut fibre — are specified in slope stabilisation, riverbank protection, road sub-base reinforcement, and land reclamation projects across the USA, Australia, Germany, and the UK.
